Should I get pet insurance?

If you are thinking about getting pet insurance, or wondering if it is worth having I will just start with a very quick YES, yes you should!

Way too often we realize what we should have done after the fact, so today I am going to give you 3 good reasons why you should get pet insurance and share a short list of options for you to research and chose from.

3 reasons why you should get pet insurance

1. Breed specific medical needs and propensity to injury:

Most of us have an idea of what breed we want our dogs to be. We chose them based on personality traits, hair length, cuteness etc.

Each breed also has a somewhat specific list of health issues propensities that you should research before bringing your baby home. Based on what types of injuries they are prone to and what illnesses might show up more often than none, insurance could be the best option to prevent expensive vet bills.

Luna's breed is prone to:

  • Hip Dysplasia

  • Cruciate Ligament Rupture ✅ x2

  • Entropion ✅

  • Elbow Dysplasia

and a few other things. When looking up the cost of these potential injuries investing in insurance made perfect sense.

Each TPLO surgery was about $5,000 (😭) insurance covered 80% of it (🎉)

2. Puppies like to live life on the edge

When Luna was a puppy I signed her up for the yearly puppy plan with Banfield hospital. If I could go back, I would have started with insurance right away.

The puppy plan, while useful, was really just a monthly plan to get a discount on vaccinations and required yearly physical exam appointments, which insurance would have also covered. Anything that happened outside of that, such as swallowing a foreign object, and needing X-rays was not discounted by the plan and turned out to be very expensive.

In her first 8 months, Luna tried to eat rocks, had a fever, eat her toys stuffings, countless diarrhea, was spayed, chewed on wires... basically gave me an heart attack every other week.

Apparently puppies just do that, so all we can do is to be prepared.

3. Give your self peace of mind

There are so many unpredictable things that could happen through out your dog's life, that having pet insurance just makes sense. Most companies will cover 80-100% of things such as:

  • Accidental injuries

  • Unexpected illnesses

  • Chronic disease

  • Dental illnesses

  • Hereditary conditions

  • Surgery

  • Cancer diagnosis and treatment

  • Prescription medications

  • Diagnostic testing

  • Emergency exam fees

The insurance I chose for Luna is MetLife - and I elected for the plan that pays back 100% of the cost after deductible are met, for up to $5,000 a year. Pay outs happen pretty quickly, and they send them directly to my account via Zelle.

Other insurances I've considered are:

Hope this was helpful! Do your research, and find the option that works best for you and your furbaby.

Happy pawrenting!
